The change in the number of neutrons emitted in the process of fission was investigated for various ratios of the fission product masses. A double ionization chamber having grids to measure the mass distribution of fission products was used to detect the fission products obtained by the fis-sion of U/ sup 235/ by thermal neutrons. A 4 pi neutron counter was used to count the fission neutrons. The ratio of the masses of the fission products X = M/sub H//M/ sub L/ is plotted as a function of the number of neutrons emitted nu (X). The minimum number of neutrons (about 2.05) are emitted as a mass ratio of 1.20 to 1.25. The total kinetic energy of the fission products is a maximum at this point, and is equal to ~180 Mev. At large mass ratios the number of fis ion neutrons increases slowly to about 2.6. It was found at the number of emitted neutrons rose sharply on appro ching symmetrical fission. At a mass ratio of 1.0 to 1.04 it was found that 3.6 neutrons were recorded per fission event, but this value is low if the low resolving power of the mass analyzer is taken into account. Calculations show at the experimental results are in agreement with the assumption that ~6 neutrons are emitted during symmetric fission. (TTT)
