THE ROLE OF FREE RADICALS IN BIOLOGICAL OXIDATIONS

Journal Article · · Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (U.S.)
The concept of free-radical formation during the enzymatic oxidation of 2-electron oxidizable substrates has been challenged by Westheimer. Examples of coupled oxidation-reduction reactions are given in which radiation acts as oxidant or reductant with the formation of intermediate free radicals. These examples indicate that free radicals may indeed be formed in enzymatic oxidations. (D.L.C.)
