INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANISMS OF THE RADIATION PROTECTION EFFECTS OF CYSTEINE (in German)

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4779017
The type of binding of the radiation protection substance cysteine to a biological metalloenzyme-system is demonstrated using alkaline phosphatase, a magnesium-zincproteide. The molecules of cysteine as well as the molecules of the substrate are bound to the zinc-ion complex as the active'' group of the enzyme; they are able to displace each other from their binding. The proven strong binding of cystelne in the complex cysteine-zinc-phosphatase is the presumptive basis for the radiation protection of phosphatase and for the presumptive reaction mechanisms responsible for damaging of the enzyme by ionizing radiation. The possible importance of the model experiment for other natural metal containing systems as well as for the radiation resistance during hibernation is discussed. (auth)
