RESEARCH ON THE SYSTEMS THORIUM-TUNGSTEN-CARBON AND URANIUM-TUNGSTEN-CARBON (in German)

The three-component Th-W-C and U-W-C sintered and luminous-arc-melted alloys were investigated by x-ray spectroscopy and metallography. A phase distribution diagram was undertaken, Thorium dissolved approximately 8 at, % carbon by lattice expansion (to a = 5.12 A), The region of ThC reached, at 1500 deg C, from 38 to 50 at. % C (a = 5.30 to 5.34 A). In the system Th-W-C no ternary phases appeared; the equilibrium was determined by means of the combinations of the boundary systems. In the system U-W-C the previously found ternary phase UWC/sub 2/ and its struetare (a =5.838 A, b = 3.255 A, and c = 10.98 A) were confirmed. In the compound UWC/sub 2/ no noticeable exchange of uranium for thorium was observed. The solubility regions were small in both systems. On the basis of observed reactions the free formanion enthalpy for ThC/ sub 2/ (--32 to --23.3 kcal/mol) and UWC/sub 2/ (--37.7 to 41.2 kcal/mol) could be calculated. (tr-auth)
