Th--B--C systems were studied roentgenographically by means of sintered and molten samples. About 100 samples were prepared. In the phase diagram area represented by and 1000 deg C (argon, 5 hr), and in the other areas it was about 1400 deg for 15 hr. As in the U--B--C system the binary crystal types ThC, ThC/ sub 2/, ThB/sub 4/, ThB/sub 6/, and B/sub 4/C were detected. The possible transition of ThC to ThC/sub 2/ (a high temperature form) was not studied in detail. Within the temperature range where Th, B, and C were studied, Th carbide and boride were not mutually soluble. However, the marked tendency for compound formation resulted in four crystal forms, ThB/sub 2/C, ThBC, ThBC/sub 2/, and Th/ sub 2/BC/sub 2/. The structure of ThB/sub 2/C is suggested tentatively to be of a C32 hexagonal type. Sintered samples of ThBC showed a complex roentgenographic pattern which suggested a H-stabilized phase, ThBC/sub 2/ is stable in air, but Th/sub 2/BC/sub 2/, like ThC/sub 2/, deco mposes in air, suggesting a close similarity between these two alloys.
