STUDIES OF THE TERNARY SYSTEM THORIUM-URANIUM-BORON (in German)

Th-U--B systems were studied roentgenographically by means of samples prepared by heat compression and by combustion under argon. Their phase distribution was determined at 800 and 1500 deg C. The phases ThB/sub 4/ and ThB/ sub 6/ were confirmed. The measured lattice parameters of these phases agreed closely with values quoted from the literature. The tetraborides ThB/sub 4/ and UB/sub 4/ form unbroken series of mixtures at both 800 and 1500 deg C, but there were no intermediate phases in the U--Th system. Although no samples could be obtained it could be determined that a triphasic alloy was formed from the constituents of the type Th--U--UB/sub 2/. All of the other crystal forms indicated by the phase diagram possess oniy very limited solubility properties. (BBB)
