POPR--PROTOTYPE ORGANIC POWER REACTOR POWER DISTRIBUTIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4777850
In order to investigate the effects of control rod programming and fuel element management on the POPR (Prototype Organic Power Reactor) power distribution, a series of two-dimensional neutron diffusion calculations was performed. These two-group calculations were made using the PDQ digital computer code in X-Y coordinates. The power distribution in a horizontal plane through the reactor core was determined for a variety of core configurations. Typical control rod patterns were investigated for the initial core, the beginning-of- cycle equilibrium core, and the end-of-cycle equilibrium core. These calculations indicated that the use of a circumferential flux suppressor will significantly reduce the large power peaks - that would otherwise occur at the radial periphery of the core. On the basis of this series of calculations, new estimates were made of the POPR power peaking factors. (auth)
