The formation of a series of trivalent lanthanide complexes in M(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/--HNO/sub 3/ systems was studied by electromigration and ion exchange. It was found that the stabilities and concentrations of cation, neutral, and anion complexes depend on the nitric acid and lanthanide content and the atomic number of the element. It was also revealed that lanthanide cations are predominant in nitric acid solutions of 1 to l.5 M, while neutral complexes are predominant in ~3 to 4 M solutions. Anion cerium complexes are formed at ~7 M, but the yttrium complexes remain neutral. Forrnation constants for La and Y complexes are determined. (R.V.J.)
