MOVING EARTH AND ROCK WITH A NUCLEAR DEVICE

The results of Project Sedan, a successful cratering experiment, are summarized. A 100-kt thermonuclear device was exploded on july 6, 1962, at a depth of 635 ft in alluvium. The resulting crater has a maximum depth of ~320 ft and an average diameter of~1200 ft, indicating that the crater diameter depends on the 0.25 power and depth on the 0.3 power of the yield in the 100-kt yield range. The fallout and ground shock are discussed. (D.L.C.)
