IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO THE REMOVAL OF HEAT PRODUCED BY THE FISSION PRODUCTS IN A NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4777095
In order to remove the heat from fission products after shut-down in a gas-cooled reactor having a closed coolant circuit, the heat exchanger is shunted by a circuit enclosing a standby heat exchanger disposed above the level of the core structure for establishing, by thermosiphoning, a flow of reactor coolant between the core and the standby heat exchanger. A header tank is provided at a level above the standby heat exchanger for supplying heat exchange fluid to the standby heat exchanger, the heat exchange fluid being returned to the header tank by thermosiphoning after being heated. The header tank may be closed to the atmosphere, and may have cooling means, ior example by water jacketing or a further heat exchanger. (NPO)
