For monitoring the power distribution throughout a reactor core disposed in a vessel and having a plurality of fuelcontaining coolant flow channels, the penetrating radiation emitted from at least one of the flow channels is collimated. The intensity of the collimated radiation at several points remote from the assembly and outside the vessel is measured. The attenuation of the radiation is a function of the density and temperature of the coolant, so that the collimated radiation has an intensity which is a direct function of the power level. A further step consists in varying the neutron flux distribution within the reactor core while mainiaining a predetermined total reactor power output. (NPO)
