METHOD AND MEANS FOR MONITORING THE POWER DISTRIBUTION THROUGHOUT A NUCLEAR CHAIN REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4719903
A method is given for monitoring the power distribution throughout a nuclear chain reacting assembly disposed in a reactor vessel and having a plurality of nuclear fuel contalning coolant flow channels through which a liquid coolant is passed. The method comprises the steps of collimating the penetrating radiation emitted from at least one of the given flow channels and measuring the intensity of the collimated radiation at points remote from the assembly and outside the vessel. The means for putting into action the above method consist of a radiation detecting system outside the core and the reactor vessel and a radiation collimator between the reactor core and the detecting system, in which the collimator includes an elongated external collimating element, which is placed immediately adjacent to the detecting system, and an elongated internal collimating element, which is placed inside the reactor vessel adjacent to the core.
