IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO CLOSURE MEANS FOR PRESSURE VESSELS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4776898
For the closure of openings of reactor pressure vessels, the positioned closure means is locked in its posi tion in the access holes by the action of the fluid pressure in the vessel. This means comprises several elements each being adapted for a limited axial movement relative to the others and parallel to the axis of the access hole. The movement of the first elements is effected by an external power during the positioning and removal period. The difference of fluid pressure existing between the two opposite faces of the closure means acts on the second elements. A series of cams is pivotally mounted along the periphery of one of the first elements. These cams abut against a shoulder of an adjacent element moving axially relative to these cams causing an outward ndovement of the cams which finally engage into an annular groove provided in the access hole wall. The continuation of this axial movement causes the displacement of a locking shoulder for engaging the cams in the groove so that the closure means can not be removed as long as there is a fluid pressure difference between the opposite faces of the closure means.
