SODIUM COOLED HEAVY WATER MODERATED NUCLEAR REACTOR
This sodium cooled heavy water moderated reactor comprlses a contalnment shell enclosing a sealed vessel containing the heavy water moderator and a plurality of tubes passes through this vessel so that the edges of their open extremities are connected in a fluid tight manner wlth the vessel wall. Below and above the vessel a lower and an upper header chamber are disposed wfthin the containment shell. These chambers are connected by barrier tubes each passing through a tube of the vessel, thus forming pairs of tubes each bounding an annular interspace communicating with the atmosphere enclosed within the containnment shell. Inside and spaced apart from the barrier tubes, fuel element tubes pass in which liquid sodium flows and which are interconnected by sodium header systems placed in the lower and upper header chamber respectively. The annular interspaces between the barrier and fuel element tubes communicate with the header chambers and form part of a helium filled closed circuit. This means ensures the thermal insulation and separation of the hot sodium circuit from the heavy water moderator which is held at a relatively low temperature. (NPO)
