THE RADIATION INJURY OF GROWING BONES (in German)

Both knee articulations of 6 week old Belgian giant rabbits of the same race were irradiated to determine among other things the amount of the total dose, which causes a recognizable lesion on growing bones. This dose is 1200 r for a field size of 8 x 10 cm at 90 kv, 6 mamp, 30 cm F.S.D., using 3 mm Al filter. Furthermore, the nature, development, and the repair of radiation injuries observed by serial x-ray examinations and associated histologic and chemical analysis were reported. These investigations showed, that the x- irradiation, administered as described above, causes the following effects in growing bones: 1. Acute and to a certain extent, reversible injuries, enlargement, blurring, and excavation of the early calcification zone, which suggests rickets, and 2. chronic persistent injuries (hypertrophic atrophy, retardation of growth, deformations, and bowings). These regression marks could be demonstrated in the roentgenograms about 30 days after completing the x irradiation. The results of the histologic and chemical investigations, published elsewhere, support these roentgenomorphological statements. (auth)
