Products of The Newer Alchemy: The Silvanus Thompson Memorial Lecture

Journal Article · · British Journal of Radiology
Applications of artificial sources of radiation in medicine are reviewed. It is pointed out that of the approximately 1,000 radioactive isotopes of elements up to atomic number 92 identified in the nuclear tables, some 800 are potentially useful in medicine in the sense that they have moderately long half- lives. The nuruber of radioisotopes now available from commercial suppliers exceeds 150, and these can be supplemented by many shorter-lived ones if they can be used close to the center of production. Radiation sources for therapy, the use of radiation sources for the sterilization of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, applications of radioisotopes in diagnosis, and the administration of radioisotopes in pharmaceutical chemicals and alone in the treatment of certain diseases are discussed.
