MEDICAL USE OF REACTORS

Journal Article · · Physics in Medicine and Biology (England)
Medical uses of reactors are reviewed. It is concluded that, at the present time, the production of radioisotopes is the most important application of reactors to medical science. Developments in this area will probably be towards the production of short-lived isotopes for specialized purposes. Activation analysis shows promise of becoming an important analytical procedure in medicine as well as other scientific areas. Although in many ways the technical problems are more difficult than with machine sources, the direct use of radiation from a reactor for therapeutic purposes is a real possibility. Neutron capture therapy would appear, at least in theory, to offer an ideal way of combining the advantages of direct physical application of radiation with the physiological concentration of isotopes.
