RADIATION RESISTANCE DEVELOPMENT BY ESCHERICHIA COLI

Journal Article · · Canadian Journal of Public Health (Canada)
OSTI ID:4776553
During multiple exposures to a Co/sup 60/ source the resistance of E. coli to radiation increased 13-fold, the survival curve changing from a linear to a convex form. Except for an increased number of cells at the stationary phase, growth curves showed no change initially, but as resistance developed the lag phase lengthened and the number of cells in the stationary phase dropped. The resistant cells showed a loss of gas production from carbohydrate substrates and loss of ability to form indole from tryptophan. Highly resistant cells showed a high incidence of elongation, increased numbers of nuclear bodies, and development of coccoid buds. (H.H.D.)
