Observations on E. coli in a phase-contrast apparatus showed considerable numbers of elongated and filament forms in cultures cultivated with sub-bacteriostatic concentrations of erythromycin (25 to 30 mu g/ml) or at 46 deg C for 18 hr under continuous gamma irradiation. These abnormal cells seldom appeared after several generations without gamma irradiation. In two of the strains the elongated forms had up to 30 to 80 nuclei, and in another, up to ten nuclei per form. With appearance of the elongated forms the radiation resistance of the cultures increased. The dose dependence curve was S-shaped. This S shape is related to the accumulation of large numbers of elongated and undivided forms, although the correlation does not always exist. Other factors can also result in radiation resistance, and the factor causing inhibition of cell division without stopping growth is considered the factor that results in increased radiation resistance.
