NOMOGRAM FOR DETERMINING DISTANCE FROM SOURCE AND SHIELDING THICKNESS FOR GAMMA SHIELDING (in Czech)

Journal Article · · Jaderna Energie

The problem of gamma shielding to tolerance levels is treated frequently in the literature; and many tables, nomograms and mechanisms were devised for calculating gamma shielding. Unfortunately, much of this work was done for the old maximum allowable dose of 0.3 rem/week and cannot be simply corrected for the new allowable dose of 0.1 rem/ week. Also, much of the work was done for a confined source of radiation. The nomogram of this paper is more flexible. It can factor in extended sources, shielding materials placed at an arbitrary distance from a source varying total distance from source to detector, and also gamma rays for a variety of source energies. The nomogram is constructed to handle various wall thicknesses of lead, iron or concrete. The wall may cover only a small fraction or about all of the distance between source and detector. (TTT)
