Water and paraffin are the most commonly used neutron shielding materials for the ( alpha ,n) type sources. In order to facilitate the calculations, nomograms were constructed from which the data needed for the design of water shields can be obtained very conveniently. The nomograms correlate the radiation rate S (n/sec) of the isotropic point source, the distance R (cm) from the source to the operating area, and the thickness d (cm) of the water shield. An operational period of 6 hours per day and a maximum permissible occupational exposure of 0.1 rem per week were used as basis of the construction of the nomnograms; other conditions may be substituted by making suitable corrections in the graphs. The field of the nomogram lying to the right of the zero thickness (d = 0) line indicates the safe operating conditions. The region in which greater shielding is needed than the distance provided, is indicated by shading. Examples are given for Po--Be sources. It is emphasized that the requirements for complete gamma shielding must be calculated separately. (TTT)
