PARAMAGNETIC CENTERS IN POTASSIUM AZIDE IRRADIATED AT LOW TEMPERATURE

Electron spin resonance measurements were made on single crystals of potassium azide (KN/sub 3/), which were irradiated and maintained at 77 deg K. Three types of paramagnetic centers were found. Two were identified from the hyperfine structure as consisting of an unpaired spin associated with nitrogen nuclei: the N/sub 2/ center and N/sub 4/ center. The third type appeared to be composed of unresolved hyperfine lines. The principal values and directions af principal axes of the spectroscropic (g) and magnetic hyperfine (T) splitting tensors are tabulated. Discussion is given on the interpretation of the tensors.
