AN INVESTIGATION OF THE REACTION O$sup 16$(/cap alpha/, 2/cap alpha/)C$sup 12$(g.s.)

An investigation was made of the angular and energy correlations between two alpha particles emitted when O/sup 16/ was bombarded with 40-Mev alpha particles. lt was found that the low lying states in O/sup 16/ are preferentially excited. The rapid intensity variatlon at high energies indicated that high spin states contribute appreciably to the total yield. Giant'' peaks in the angle- energy correlation occurred at angle and energy regions where the recoil momentum of the C/sup 12/ nucleus was small. (M.C.G.)
