INVESTIGATION OF THE ENERGY LEVELS OF He$sup 6$ (thesis)
At Los Alamos, one of the Van de Graaff accelerators is used to accelerate tritons up to 2.5 Mev in energy. Using this machine and bombarding a Li target, the Li/sup 7/(T, alpha )He/sup 6/ reaction can be studied. The energy of t he alpha -particles from this reaction can be used in determining the energy levels of He/sup 6/. A broad-range spectrograph employing a 30-in. nuclear-track plate was constructed and employed in conjunction with the Van de Graaff. The construction and operation of the spectrograph are described. Preliminary results from scanning the exposed nuclear plates give evidence for the ground state and the first excited state of He/sup 6/ with the energy of the first excited state being 1.772 plus or minus 0.017 Mev.
