AN IMPROVED DETERMINATION OF THE BRANCHING RATIO OF THE DECAY OF THE K$sub 1$$sup 0$ MESON

A study was made of the neutral decay mode of the K/sub 1/meson whose products are taken to be two neutral pions. The K/sub 1/-mesons were produced in a bubble chamber by 1140 and 1060 Mev/c pi /sup -/-mesons. In 180,000 pictures, 440 charged decays of the K/sub 1/-meson into pi /sup +/- and pi /sup -/-mesons and 172 neutral decays into two pi /sup 0/-mesons were found. The nunwber of 2, 3, and 4 gamma events was 85, 64, and 23 respectively. On the basis of these events the ratio of the number of K/sub 1/-mesons decaying into two pi /sup 0/- mesons to the total number of K/sub 1/ decays was found to be 0.296 plus or minus 0.027. (M.C.G.)
