The preparation, purification, and identification of xenon difluoride, XeF/sub 2/, is reported. It is a colorless solid with a vapor pressure comparable to that of XeF/sub 4/, about 3 mm at room temperature. It can be sublimed easily at room temperature to give weakly birefringent rhombohedrons, along with a few three- and six-sided crystal figures. The spectrum of Xef/sub 2/ at 100 deg C with nearly saturated vapor pressure howed a band at 1070 cm/sup -1/ , with no discernible Q branch, and a P-R peak separation of 15 cm/sup -1/. (P.C.H.)
