Transient analysis studies of the Hydro-Quebec 735-kV series-compensated network with the ideal switch representation for line circuit breakers exhibit the occurrence of abnormally delayed current-zero crossings under some fault conditions. The discovery of this phenomenon has triggered specific studies to verify the performance of existing air-blast circuit breakers and to draft the technical specifications of future SF{sub 6} gas circuit breakers.
