It was established that formaldehyde with yields of 6.3 molecules/100 ev and 2.8 molecules/100 ev is formed in oxygen and hydrogen, respectively, from the x irradiation of acetone. The possibilities for the formation of formaldehyde by radiolysis of acetone were discussed from the viewpoint of the isomerization of free radicals. In the oxidation radiolysis of acetone, the post-effect of formaldehyde was determined. The concentration of the formaldehyde formed decreases after stopping the irradiation with velocities of 1.7 x 10-9 mol/ ml/sec. After 25 to 30 min, calculated from the stopping of the irradiation, the concentration of formaldehyde begins again to increase, passes through a maximum, and decreases again to a definite constant value. The interpretation oi the post effect depends on the polymerization of the formaldehyde which leads to the formation of trioxan. This polymerizes from the catalytic effect of the acids produced in the same medium, so that the highly reactive formaldehyde which can react with acetone is formed.
