The mechanical, chemical engineering and chemical problems of the Dounreay Fast Reactor have been largely overcome. The heat removal circuits and control rod mechanisms are now functioning as required, and the purity of the coolant has been very much improved. Operation of the reactor in the medium power range (up to 11 Mw) has shown the reactor to be stable and controllable with no special difficulties deriving from its operation as a fast system. Results are given for shielding and kinetic experiments. (auth)
