The photolysis of various mixtures of diethyl ketone and methyl iodide was investigated in order to obtain information regarding disproportionation and recombination reactions of ethyl radicals and iodine atoms. Ethyl radicals, produced by photolysis of diethyl ketone, react with iodine atoms, produced by photolysis of methyl iodide, according to reactions C2H5 + I → C2H4 + HI and C2H5 + I → C2H5I. The results indicate k13/k14 = 0.33 plus or minus 0.03. The influence of added gas and the effect of temperature are discussed.
