In the process, an aqueous mineral acid solution of Th values is subjected to countercurrert extraction with a kerosene solution of an alkyl phosphate and also 5% dibutyl or tributyl phosphate. The resulting organic extract is stripped of Th by successive countercurrent extractions with H/sub 2/ SO/sub 4/ and alkali metal carbonate solutions. Impurities may be stripped from the extract with HCl prior to Th stripping. The Th may be precipitated as the oxalate from the stripping solution and calcined to the oxide. (D.L.C.)
