ACCURATE NUCLEAR FUEL BURNUP ANALYSES. Third Quarterly Progress Report. June-August 1962

Technical Report ·

Irradiati on programs were begun in MTR and VBWR to produce irradiated foils for relative fission yield and cross-section determinations. An ion exchange separation procedure for neodymium involving preferential adsorption on Dowex-1 from lithium nitrate solution is being investigated. A solvent extracti on procedure for neodymium with di(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid is also being studied. In the mass spectrometry of neodymium it was found that rhenium filaments coated with carbon by heating in a butene atmosphere would reduce neodymium to the metal and prevent the formation of the less desirable NdO/sup +/ ion in favor of the Nd/sup +/ ion.
