Title: STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF X-RADIATION ON THE MEDULLAR LAYER OF THE ADRENAL GLANDS AND ITS HORMONES (in Russian)

Exposure of the adrenal glands to ionizing radiation results in marked changes which affect the course of radiation sickness. This problem was further studied by determining the changes in the concentration of adrenalin and similar materials in the adrenal glands, the blood, and the liver of white mice, aged between 8 to 10 weeks, exposed to x ray doses of 600 and 2000 r at the dose rate of 30 to 35 r/min. The animals were killed at various periods, ranging from 2 hours to 8 days after the irradiation. In another test series the adrenal glands of the animals were shielded with 3-mm thick lead foils. It was found that the radiation caused considerable changes in the relative amounts of the catecholamines in the organs; it is assumed that the changes were caused by both the direct irradiation of the glands and to remote effects of other parts of the irradiated animals. The radiation also induced a reduction of the free adrenalin content of the adrenal gland; this was probably caused by increase of the secretion from the gland, reversal of the adrenalin into dehydroadrenalin, and inhibition of the adrenalin synthesis.
