METABOLISM OF I$sup 131$ AND THYROIDAL FUNCTION OF THE LARVAE (AMMOCOETE) OF A CYCLOSTOME PETROMYZON PLANERI BL (in French)
I/sup 131/ labeled iodides, added to immersion water, are fixed by larvae of Petromyzon planeri Bl. (Ammocoetes). The kinetics of binding and the distrivution of radioactivity in tissues of Ammocoetes were studied. I/sup 131/ is concentrated preferentially in two organs, the endostyle and the dorsalcord. Endocrine activity of the endostyle was studied by radio-chromatography and radio- electrophoresis of labeled iodinated compounds from the endostylar region as well as tissues receiving hormones. The endostylar region contains thyroid hormones, thyroxine and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine, together with their precursors, 3,5- diiodolyrosine and 3-monoiodotyrosine. These iodinated aminoacids are incorporated into a protein from which they are liberated by enzymatic hydrolysis. No iodoprotein is present in nonendostylar tissues; almost all of the radioactivily is extractable by acid n-butanol. Receptive tissues contain only thyroxine and small amounts of 3,5,3' -triiodothyronine. The quantitative ratio of iodinated aminoacids, both in the endostyle and in peripheric tissues, is highly variable according to incubation time with labeled iodides. The biosynthesis of thyroid hormones by the endostyle of Ammocoetes seems to be not dissimilar to that of the thyroid gland of higher vertebrates but it is, however, rather slower. The hematic transport of the thyroid hormones is assured by a thyroxine binding protein. (auth)
