METHOD OF PRODUCING A STABLE COAGEL OF AN ALKALINE EARTH FLUORIDE

A method is given for producing stable coagels of MgF/sub 2/, CaF/sub 2/ , SrF/sub 2/, and BaF/sub 2/. The method comprises the steps of forming a dispersion of the fluoride in water, increasing the surface charge on the dispersed particles by addition of a solution of a potential-determining salt, and adding a coagulating solution to produce a gel containing 50 to 98 vol% water. In many instances, the chloride of the alkaline earth metal can be used both as the potential-determining salt and as the coagulant. Examples are given. (D.L.C.)
