EXCITATION OF C$sup 12$ NUCLEI BY 660 Mev PROTONS (in Russian)

The energy spectrum of secondary particles from p + C collisions was measured at small angles of 4.2, 5.2, 7.0, tering of protons on carbon nuclei from the corresponding inelastic processes. The beam of secondary particles, scattered at an angle theta , was directed to the center of an analyzing magnet, and was counted either by a telescope consisting of three scintillation counters, or by an ionization chamber filled with argon. The inelastic scattering contribution was determined by subtracting out the p-p elastic scattering contribution. The energy most frequently imparted by the proton to the C/sup 12/ nucleus corresponds to that of the giant photoresonance for C/sup 12/, but the width of the spectrum at half-height, which was 30 Mev at an angle of 5.2 deg and 50 Mev for an angle of 10.7 deg , was significantly wider than the giant photoresonance of C/sup 12/. At 7 deg the differential inelastic scattering cross-section is approximates 130 x 10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2//sterad. Collective excitations of the nucleus which do not occur in photonuclear transitions make a noticeable contribution during the scattering of 660-Mev protons by C/sup 12/ nuclei at small angles. (TTT)
