In measuring the absolute activity of soft- BETA emitters such as S³⁵, the main error arises from self-absorption of BETA radiation by the source. A method of preparing a S³⁵ source having only slight self-absorption, and of estimating the self-absorption of this source, is discussed. The source preparation procedure is as follows: the sample solution, sulfuric acid in dilute hydrochloric acid solution, is dropped onto a thin vinyl film and dried on a dessicant; this source is then dissolved with redistilled water and again dried up in an ammoniac atmosphere. Nb⁹⁵, which emits a BETA particle with the same maximum and mean energy as that emitted by S³⁵ and also emits a prompt gamma ray, is also studied. Crystal sizes in the Nb⁹⁵ source are compared with those in the S/sup 35/ source microscopically. Self-absorption in the Nb⁹⁵ source is measured by determinations of the ratio of BETA counting rate/ BETA - gamma coincidence counting rate in a 4 pi ge ometry. The amount of self-absorption in sources prepared by the method described ranges from 2 to 5%. (auth)
