A GENERALIZATION OF A SUFFICIENT CONDITION FOR HYDROMAGNETIC STABILITY

A sufficient condition for the stability of static hydromagnetic equilibria, involving volume current, is derived in terms of the principal curvatures of magnetic surfaces. Cusp-type geometries and the cylindrical inverse pinch are shown to be particular cases in which this condition is satisfied. The stability of the Levitron is discussed in terms of this criterion.
