ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS ON THE LUNG IN IRRADIATED ANIMALS (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Atti accad. med. lombarda
OSTI ID:4770037

Rats were irradiated in the thoracic region by a daily dose of 200 r for 12 days, to a total dose of 2400 r. One, 7, and 25 days later the ultrastructure of lung tissue was examined. This dose (LD/sub 50/ for 30-day mortality) damaged various cytoplasmic organelles in alveolar epithelial cells. The first day after irradiation, the lamellar myelin-like inclusion bodies lost theia usual structure and appeared to be transformed into osmiophilic lipid globules. This process was more marked 7 and 25 days later. Mitochondria became enlarged and their cristae fragmented. Nuclei initially retained normal chromatin strueture but by 25 days chromatin granules accumulated on ihe periphery of the nucleus. Ergastoplasmic sacs expanded into vacuoles, and the villous protrusions of the epithelial cells became shorter and less numerous. Capillary endothelial cells also showed vacuolation, representing changes in mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The above-mentioned changes in myelin inclusion bodies from a lamellar to an annorphous state appears to be a particular characteristic alteration of irradiated alveolar cells. (H.H.D.)
