A process is given for preparing non-porous shaped articles of U/sub 3/ Si/sub 2/, USi, USi/sub 2/, and USi/sub 3/. The process comprises introducing into a mold an intimate mixture of U and Si particles in the desired proportions, heating the mixture under vacuum to at least 450 deg C (say 625 to 675 deg C) to solidify the mixture, and completing the U-Si reaction by removing the mixture from the mold and heating with induction to 1400 to 1500 deg C in vacuum. Apparatuses for making cylindrical bars with this process are described. (D.L.C.)
