Samples of palmitic acid C/sub 14/H/sub 31/COOH, potassium palmitate, and the triglyceride of palmitic acid (C/sub 15/H/sub 31/COO)/sub 3/C/sub 3/H/sub 5/ were irradiated at -196 deg C with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays at a dose rate of ~5 x 10/sup 16/ ev/g-sec as determined by ferrous sulfate dosimetry. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, taken at -196 deg C after irradiation, showed the presence of different radicals in the samples. A doublet with a splitting of 28 to 30 oersteds, which is characteristic of all irradisample. The radical yields (in radicals per 100 ev) were found to be 20 for irradiation in vacuum and 20 for irradiation in air in the case of palmitic acid, 12 and 7 respectively for the tripalmitate, and 9 and 7 respectively for potassium palmitate. Irradiation in oxygen leads to a decrease in radical yields for the salt and ether, and has no effect on the radical yield of the acid. No radicals of the .peroxy type could be detected in the EPR spectra at -196 deg C. The concentration of radicals in palmitic acid is ~3 x 10/sup 21/ ev/g, and has still not attained a state of stationary equilibrium at this relatively high dose. (TTT)
