EPR STUDY OF THE RADIATION VULCANIZATION OF RUBBER IN THE PRESENCE OF SULFUR AND HEXACHLOROETHANE

Recorded epr spectra were used to study the formation of free radicals during the radiation polymerization of natural rubber (NR) and mixtures of NR with 2 wt% sulfur or 10 wt % C/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/. Irradiation was conducted at -- 196 to 20 deg C with Co/sup 60/ at a dose of 6 to 11 Mr with the following results: long-lived radicals with an initial concentration of (1 to 2.5) x 10/sup 14/ mg/sup -1/ formed in NR and its mixtures with S or C/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/ at 20 deg C and 6 to 8 Mr; radicals of different lives formed with irradiation at -196 deg C. (Their initial concentrations in NR, NR + C/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/ and in NR + S were (4.9 plus or minus 0.7) x 10/sup 15/ mg/sup -1/, (11 plus or minus 2) x 10/sup 15/ mg/sup -1/, and (2.6 plus or minus 0.6) x 1 0/sup 15/ mg/sup -1/ respectively.) If the NR + C/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/ sample irradiated at --196 deg C was slowly brought to room temperature, structuration occurred near the vitrification temperature (--70 deg C); gradual heating of the NR + S sample yielded new short- lived radicals with a g factor typical of S radicals; after irradiation, crystalline C/sub 2/Cl/sub 6/ showed an intensive epr signal (the formation of CCl/sub 3/ radicals was confirmed by the analytical detection of chloroform); structuration of NR irradiated at low temperatures was supported by C/sub 2/Cl/ sub 6/ and impeded by S, which increased the static strength of the radiation vulcanizate; and crystalline S showed only a weak epr signal.
