A chronopotentiometric method was used to measure the diffusion of PbC1/ sub 2/ (0.1 to 0.2 mole %) in NaCl, KCl, and a ixture of NaCl and KCl. A rectangular polished plate of latinum with an area of about 1 cm/sup 2/ served as the cathode. used lead in a quartz tube connected with the melt by a pillary served as an anode and comparison electrode. All measurements were carried out in an atmosphere of argon. A plot of 1/T versus lg DELTA (the diffusion coefficient) gave a straight line, and showed that the following relationship was valid: DELTA -- DELTA /sub 0/ exp (--W/RT). The activation energies for the diffusion of lead ions in KCl, NaCl, and NaCl--KCl mixtures were calculated to be 2120, 1670, and 1410 cal/mole respectively. Complexing of lead was noted in the KCl--NaCl mixtures, and especially in pure KCl. It is assumed that the apparent diffusion coefficient at high current densities is related to the actual diffusion coefficient as follows: DELTA /sub act/.= DELTA STA1 + (1/K)!/sup 2/. Here K is the dissociation constant of the complex. The values for the dissociation constants of the lead complex in a PbCl/sub 2/--KCl mixture were calculated to be 10.0 at 965 deg , 0.1 at 942 deg , 8.3 at 914 deg , 6.2 at 863 deg , 5.5 at 833 deg , and 5.6 at 811 deg K. These values of the dissociation constants are close to values quoted in the literature for the lead chloride complex in fused nitrate salts. (TTT)
