The effect of additions of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, silicon, or tin on the air-oxidation resistance of NbAl/sub 3/ was investigated. NbAl/sub 3/- compound alloys containing up to 15 weight percent of the addition element were arc melted in a cold-crucible, non-consumable electrode arc furnace. The as-cast alloys were homogenized and then subjected to screening air-oxidation tests at 760 deg C in dry and humid air. Those alloy compositions which exhibited oxidation resistance throughout a 1000-hour exposure were studied by a thermogravimetric technique to determine the rate laws governing the oxidation. Also, an oxidation survey of these oxidation-resistant compositi ons at 1370 deg C was conducted. The phase equilibria of the alloys were investigated after being given isothermal anneals at 850, 1000, 1150, 1250, 1300 and 1370 deg C by metallographic and x-ray-diffraction techniques. The range of homogeneify of the NbAl/sub 3/ compound was established insofar as possible in each system. (auth)
