ABS>Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) films containing DPPH were irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays at 5 x 10/sup 4/ to 1.8 x 10/sup 5/ r/h r in air. The disappearance of DPPH in the polymer was measured spectroscopically. The G- value of the radical formation of PMMA calculated from the DPPH disappearance rate was 2.8 which was much smaller than the 12.5 for MMA. The critical concentrations of DPPH in solid polymers were also found to be much higher than those in solution. Hence, the efficiencies of the radical scavenging reaction of DPPH in solid polymers were lower than those in liquids. The protective effects of DPPH on PMMA observed during the radiation decomposition of the latter were probably due to the capture of side-chain radicals. The scavenger reaction of DPPH for radicals produced by the thermal decomposition of benzoyl peroxide in PMMA is also discussed. (OID)
