Measurements have been made of the differential cross sections for the V/ sup 51/(n,d) reaction at 14.4 Mev, exciting the 0/sup +/, 2/sup +/, 4/sup +/, and 6/sup +/ states in Ti/sup 50/. A distorted-wav e Born approximation (DWBA) analysis of the results shows them to be consistent with the predictions of the simple shell model, that is, pure (f/sub 7/2/)/sup 3/ configuration for V/sup 51/ ground stat e, with seniority a good quantum number, within the uncertainties of both the experiment and the analysis. In particular, the data are consistent with pure 1 = 3 transitions, although small amounts of 1 = 1 pickup to the 2/sup +/ and 4/sup +/ states cannot be excluded. The uncertainties in the DWBA analysis, and their effects on quantitative determination of the spectroscopic factors, are fully discussed. (auth)
