Female rabbits were subject to x-ray irradiation, and then crossed with normal rabbits. The female rabbits were given whole-body doses of 50 and 250 r, and local doses of 25 and 75 r in the region of the ovaries. The content of alkali phosphatase, DNA, RNA, and of oxidative activity (the rate of oxidation of the leucobase thiomine by blood plasma) were determined before irradiation, and on the 10th day after irradiation. It was found that the activity of alkali phosphatase in blood serum drops sharply, the content of DNA and RNA rises, and the oxidative activity of the blood drops. With a local dose of 25 r and mating on the 14th day after irradiation, the progeny from the irradiated females and normal males showed 86.7% males as compared to 48% males in the controls. With a higher local dose of 75 r, an irreversible sterility was observed (17 females born dead, and two males born alive in 1he progeny). With a whole-body dose of 50 r, and mating on the 14th day after irradiation, the percentage of males in the progeny was high (81%). With a whole-body dose of 2.50 r, and mating on the 14th day after irradiation, ihe percentage of males was 100% (34 males and no females). The irradiated females-then entered a period of temporary sterility, and after about two months, began to bear young again with a high precentage of males (94 7% males when mating iook place 45 days after irradiation, and 78.6% males when mating took place 75 days after irradiation.
