FERTILITY STUDIES OF X-IRRADIATED MALE MICE

Journal Article · · Fertility and Sterility
Whole-body x irradiation of male Swiss mice at a single exposure of 625 r (LD/sub 50/30/) decreased the fertility rate and significantly lowered the number of progeny in litters obtained by mating x irradiated males with nonirradiated females 1 to 45 days after irradiation. At this dose level, x- irradiated males recovered in their fertility rate, as judged from their litter size production, 60 to 75 days postirradiation. Intraperitoneal administration of 1 ml olive oil within an hour after whole-body x irradiation improved the fertility 30 days postirradiation. The olive oil-treated mice were twice as fertile as the untreated x irradiated male mice. litter size from matings of treated and untreated x irradiated male mice did not differ. Postirradiation olive oil treatment appears to accelerate rate of recovery by stimulating regenerative processes in x-irradiated males. (H.H.D.)
