Although a drop in catalase activity is observed on irradiating an animal, administration of catalase is ineffective as a protective agent against irradiation. Iron complexes of triethylenetetramine (TETA) were found to be effectlve in protectlng mice from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. These amines can destroy hydrogen peroxlde similarly to catalase. A dose of 400 mg/kg body weight of 10/sup -3/ to 10/sup -4/ M TETA-Fe/sup +2/ complex showed a marked increase in the number of survivals of white mice given a dose of 550 r as compared to a group of untreated controls. Three series of experiments on mice, white rats, and dogs showed an increased level of catalase activity, or at least no drop in activity, in the blood of the irradiated animals. The high level of catalase activity in the blood of the irradiated animaIs was correlated with the increase in survival at a confidence level of 98 to 99%. In all probability, the catalase'' mechanism plays a definite role in the pathogenesis of radiation sickness. (TTT)
