VARIATIONS IN THE FREQUENCY OF "DRUMSTICKS" IN THE RABBIT AFTER PANIRRADIATION

Journal Article · · Boll. Soc. Ital. Biol. Sper.
OSTI ID:4768194
Female rabbits were irradiated with a single dose of 300 r or with 200 r daily doses and changes in the number and morphology of circulnting granulocytes were followed daily for 8 days. In the 1st group, the number of granulocytes fell to a minimum on the 3rd to 4th day then rose to a low maximum on the 8th day and declined again. The number of cells with drumstick-like nuclei showed inverse changes, becoming maximum on the 4th day and minimum on the 7th day. The number of medially segmented nuclei rose only slightly on the 3rd day, then fell. With lower x-ray doses the total number of cells fell more slowly, the number of drumstick forms rose less markedly, and the number of medially segmented forms rose to a greater extent than after the higher dose. These changes are interpreted in terms of the rate of maturation of granulocytes and their stage at release into the circulation from bone marrow. (H.H.D.)
